FUN and FUNDdraising

Last year, Relay For Life of Second Life raised $222,000. This year’s target is US$300,000. Event Chair MamaP Beerbaum said: ‘My main goals for this year’s event are to bring in new relayers, those we haven’t reached before, to have all of our relayers work as “one team”, helping one another, supporting each other, all working towards a common goal, and to have a successful fund raising season, setting new records in those efforts!’ She continued: ‘I love attending team events and I love interacting with our relayers. Everyone participates for their own reasons, but we share one common goal. The stories of our relayers bring everything to life for me.’

Stingray9798 Raymaker, the American Cancer Society’s representative in Second Life, added: This year, Relay For Life of Second Life will raise its one millionth US dollar. This momentous occasion gives our volunteers a reason to rally, and a reason to get excited. It’s a special year and a landmark that has inspired our volunteers to think bigger, better, and to remember how amazingly unique and groundbreaking the Relay For Life of Second Life is.’ He continued: ‘My hope for 2011 is that all of our volunteers have fun while participating in this event and have a fulfilled experience, knowing that they are leveraging technology to make a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.’

Seasons of Hope

The theme of this year’s Relay For Life of Second Life is Seasons of Hope. Because every season – winter, spring, summer or fall – is a season of hope. As Event Co-Chair Dwen Dooley said:  Even in the shortest days, the darkest nights, the coldest winds, there is hope, and nothing can take that from anyone.’ Stingray added: ‘Hope is the most important intangible that Relay For Life provides, because the work that volunteers, teams, survivors and caregivers do through Relay For Life allows newly diagnosed cancer patients opportunities for survival that didn’t exist years before.  And that is the kind of hope that each season brings.’

Relay weekend

After 18 weeks of fun and fundraising, the teams will build campsites for Relay Weekend which will take place on July 16 and 17. Team members, volunteers and members of the SL community will walk a track for 24 hours to Celebrate survivorship, Remember those we have lost, and Fight Back to save lives by making a personal pledge to fight cancer.

About Relay For Life of Second Life

Relay For Life® is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life® in July each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July. In July teams build campsites and walk a track, just like in a real world Relay. The main RFL of SL track event this year will take place on July 16-17. We will walk a virtual track for 24 hours, just like in a real world Relay For Life. Team members build and gather at their team campsites, enjoy live music, participate in fun events, and explore the many Relay sims and the incredible builds by some of Second Life’s top designers, as the event runs overnight and into the next morning.

In 2010 Relay For Life of Second Life attracted more than 120 teams with participants from over 30 countries, held over 300 team fundraising events between March and July, and raised over US$222,000 (that’s REAL US dollars) for cancer research and education. The funds raised go to research, advocacy, patient services and programs, with 12-15% going to international projects. Just as in the real world, RFL of SL is an international event.

Meet Mr. Costa Rica Finalist: Angelik Lavecchia

Meet Mr. Costa Rica Finalist: Angelik Lavecchia

It’s time to meet the 2011 Mr. Costa Rica Finalist! I know you are all excited to get to know them better and check out their sexy looks! I have had some time to spy on each of them at practices and events, let me tell you they are working hard and looking good! No slackers in this bunch. The judges are going to have a tough time deciding this one. I don’t envy their job at all. I am going to introduce you to our finalists in alphabetical order starting with Mr. Angelik Lavecchia. All the finalists were asked the same questions and I think you are going to really enjoy getting to know them better as I have. Without further ado, let’s meet our first finalist…Angelik Lavecchia!

How and why did you end up adding a Second Life to your RL?
The first time I heard about SL, was on a soap opera. There was a character that played it and found her love there. At that time I didn’t even give it any importance. One day, I was talking with some colleagues from work, and they mentioned a story they saw on tv about SL and what people could do. That day yes… I got curious, did some research and I started on SL. I had a lot of fun, started modeling one month after, and even without noticing, SL took part of my life, not as an addiction, but as a complement.

What made you choose Costa Rica Sims as your home?
My first contact with CRS was from a friend when I was searching a place to live. I loved it, but that time, I was not looking for a real place to live. I was alone, giving my first steps in both SL and modeling, and all I wanted was a place bigger enough to put my pose stand. I was focused just on my career. It was when I got married that we decided to move, and the first place that came up was indeed CRS.

What do you think sets Costa Rica Sims apart from all the other places one could choose to live in SL?
CRS has two things that in my opinion are awesome for a place to live in SL. Not just the amazing building full of awesome details, but also a great sense of community. I have lived in other places, and most times I didn’t even know who my neighbors were. At CRS, what happens is a great sense of friendship among people that unite all the Sims, and that’s great, because even if you live alone, you aren’t really alone.

Why did you choose to enter the Mr. Costa Rica pageant?
I love to live in CRS, and as a model I participate also in other contests. In my opinion, I think it’s normal to join both things and even dreaming of having the honor to represent this great place and awesome community.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Costa Rica Sims?
Modeling takes a lot of my time and to be honest, I haven’t had much time to explore all that CRS have to offer. So, each time I can, I take the CRS taxi and try to explore always a different place. However, until now what took my heart was the peaceful and romantic rain forest.

What would you tell someone thinking about making their home in Costa Rica Sims?
“Come”. You will not regret it, for sure.

What is the best thing about yourself you have to offer the Costa Rica community?
My hard work and honestly, I think are the best qualities that I can offer to this community.

One thing you bring from RL to SL that you think is important?
My parents, especially my mother, always taught me to have good values and to put them in practice. I always remember that in RL, and despite that my AVI is cuter… lol, he is me and I apply that on SL too. I think good values are what indeed make all the difference both in RL as in SL.

Anything from SL you have learned that has been beneficial to your RL?
I have met some amazing people around the world, and even covered with a “game label”, the exchange of experiences, is the most important thing that we can take from SL to RL.

I want to thank Angelik for taking the time to answer my questions and I look forward to seeing him and the other finalists competing for the coveted title of Mr. Costa Rica! Check back tomorrow to meet out next finalist! Syd <3
